Loss to ND ends impressive streak
When asked about the evaluation of his team, veteran head boys basketball coach Eric Snyder likes to refer to his squad as being "as good as their last game."
Well, the Roughies' last game entering this week was a 65-58 loss at Notre Dame. Before that, however, they had a three-game winning streak that began with an impressive 47-45 victory over Salisbury.
With the trifecta, the Roughies raised their record to 8-6 overall and 6-3 in the Colonial League in which they remain in line for a spot to play in the league tournament. Moreover, Catty moved two wins closer to clinching a district playoff spot.
"The Salisbury victory was a huge win for us," said Snyder, who picked up his 300th career victory during the span. "That was the best offensive effort we have had all year. We executed very well and shot the ball well.
"We had a very good week and it could have been a great week if we beat Notre Dame. We were leading them (Notre Dame), but we didn't hit some big shots down the stretch. We also got into foul trouble early."
Snyder credited some of his team's success to the play of the frontcourt of Derrick and Kevin Bond along with Paryss Marshall.
"Derrick (Bond) has been playing very well on defense and has also done a great job offensively," said Snyder. "He and his brother both change and block a lot of shots. They can cause a lot of problems for offenses.
"Paryss (Marshall) has also been a force down low. They all three have long arms and have been very active."
Snyder also watches the evolution of his bench as Dakota Schiffer, Ricky Houser, and Sean Klobosits all continue to round out the Roughies' eight-player rotation.
"Those guys have been coming along," he said. "(Schiffer) went down with his ankle in the first quarter against Notre Dame. But he came back into the game and gutted it out. Houser and Klobosits both are improving their games."
With eight games remaining that began Tuesday night against Saucon Valley, the Roughies found themselves in a favorable situation with six of those contests at home. They also are in an advantageous situation in the league playoffs as they already have a victory over Southern Lehigh and needed a win over Saucon Tuesday.
It will be a matter of playing consistent basketball down the stretch.
"We need to keep playing well as a unit," said Snyder. "We have put ourselves in a good position and we have to take advantage of it."
