Borough receives $2,568 check

The Borough of Northampton recently received a financial boost upon receipt of a $2,568 check from its health care provider.

Council at its Jan. 6 meeting also learned the Alliance Fire Company provided Police Chief Ronald Morey with a $400 stipend that will be applied to the costs of the sixth grade D.A.R.E. program at Colonel John Siegfried Elementary School and Good Shepherd Parochial School.

The police department's equipment fund was provided a $500 donation from the Reichel Funeral Home, Northampton.

"We received a quarterly check from Northampton County for the Atlas Cement Museum. The amount of the check was $250," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said.

William Lerchenmiller, a former borough councilman and businessman, who died several years ago, provided the borough with a $1 million gift, which was applied to the sewer fund.

"As done in the past, I had a Christmas log taken to William Lerchenmiller's grave site [Hellertown] by a public works employee and a volunteer," Zarayko said.

Zarayko said each December he and a council member and Mayor Thomas Reenock visit Lerchenmiller's final resting place and set a wreath at the grave around the holidays. The borough also named a major road which carries Lerchenmiller's name.

Council in other action acted on a petition from residents on Evans Street, approving their request to post the street as no parking on school days, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., unless a permit is provided.

"In the very near future our crew leader, Clifford Eckhart, along with some borough employees, will begin constructing the concrete platforms for the three generators that will be installed at various pump stations," Zarayko said.

During the meeting it was also announced the pick-up of discarded Christmas trees by public works personnel has begun.

"I found it unusual that the day after Christmas the [crews] picked up approximately 20 trees," Zarayko said.
