LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Hawks look to stay hot

It has been a good New Year for Bethlehem Catholic and the Hawks hope that theme continues this week, as they head into another rugged stretch of the season.

Becahi (8-6, 5-3) have won five straight games heading into Tuesday's league battle against Parkland (12-2, 6-2), weather permitting, and have won seven of eight games, surging themselves to the top of the LVC East division.

Head coach Mike Frew has acknowledged the "buy-in" of a team concept that his players have taken heed to, but also understands that things do not get easier for his group as they move into a week with four games, starting with the Trojans.

"Early on when we were struggling in the season, we were dealing with selfishness," Frew said. "That's not the case anymore and the guys are listening and buying in to the team concept. We've had some good wins recently and I told our players that people are going to take notice, but we can't get complacent. I still think our best basketball is ahead of us, but we can only focus on one opponent at a time."

With back-to-back league wins over Whitehall (58-52) and Allen (64-43) last week, the Hawks have turned the corner this season and they're getting help from various individuals.

Freddie Simmons led the way against Whitehall with a 22-point effort, while Justin Lenzer nailed five three-pointers against Allen to lead the team with 19 points. It shows that the Hawks aren't a one-man operation when it comes to getting buckets, but have shown the ability to share the ball.

With the Parkland contest past Press deadlines, the Hawks travel to Pottsville tonight for a makeup contest, followed by Friday's road tilt at Emmaus (11-4). They wrap up the week Sunday afternoon by taking on state ranked Abington Heights at noon apart of the Hoop Group festivities at Parkland.

"It's a big week," Frew said. "Any of these nights you can go out and face a team that's hot or cold. We understand the position we've put ourselves in, but we don't want to take a step back. We don't have an easy game on the schedule left, so we just have to take things one game at a time."
