Hawks 2nd at Escape the Rock
It appears that Bethlehem Catholic's wrestlers are heating up at the right time of the year, as the Hawks took second place over the weekend at the Escape the Rock tournament at Council Rock South High School.
A second-place finish usually isn't what head coach Jeff Karam has in mind, but falling short to Blair Academy by a 277.5 to 197.5 margin wasn't surprising.
The Hawks placed nine wrestlers, advanced five to the finals and came home with four champions before they gear up for a huge week of dual meet action, starting tonight with a bout against Liberty (13-1).
"This was probably the best tournament performance we've had all year," said Karam. "When you look at the point difference between us and Blair it looks like a lot, but I was really happy with how our guys wrestled."
Zeke Moisey led the way in the gold medal parade, taking home a 6-4 decision over Blair's Matthew Kolodzik in the 126-pound finale. It marked the second time Moisey has topped Kolodzik this season, beating the Buc in the finals of the Beast of the East tournament by a 7-4 decision.
"I think Zeke validated to everyone that what he did in the Beast finals wasn't a fluke," Karam said. "He's wrestling really well right now."
Jake Riegel (106) and Luke Karam (113) each got championship wins over fellow LVC counterparts, topping Northampton's Dan Moran and Michael Scheetz respectively.
Riegel scored a 2-1 overtime win over Moran, while Karam worked through a 5-1 decision over Scheetz. Andrew Dunn (220) earned the final gold medal for Becahi following a 4-3 overtime victory over Parkland's Omar Haddad.
Jose Ortiz (182) also reached the finals for the Hawks, but lost a 3-2 decision to Cole DePasquale of J.W. Robinson to round out the Hawks finals contingent.
Nick Cortopassi (170) took fourth for Becahi, while Joey Gould (120), Stephen Maloney (132) and Mason Angstadt (145) rounded out the Hawks medal contingent with seventh place finishes.
With Liberty on the horizon and a trip to Easton Saturday night, Karam knows that his team will face challenges in the coming week despite being heavy favorites.
"For teams like Liberty and Easton, they're taking on the role of hunters against us," he said. "They want to take us down and it's going to be competitive.
"But it's always special when you face your brother [Jody] and this week's match is no different. I always want to beat my older brother because he's handed me my share of losses over the years and I still remember when he shut us out when I was at Freedom. I always keep that in the back of my mind."
