FHS boys get wins over Allen and Nazareth

Freedom High School's boys swimming team was victorious over Allen, 106-56, and Nazareth, 105-75, last week.

The Patriots won all but two individual events against the Blue Eagles, including Connor Harrigan, who placed first in the 200 free in 1:49.69 and the 500 free in 4:54.78, Peter Conzola, who took first place in the 200 IM in 2:04.64 and the 100 butterfly in 51.67, which broke the pool record, and Sam Magnan, who won the 100 free in 49.17 and the 100 backstroke in 57.62.

In the 100 free, Magnan outswam Nazareth's Grant Durner by .26 seconds.

"I swim club with Grant Durner, and I swam with Brandon Shelly [who placed third] when I was younger, so I knew it was going to be close. Since it's the 100, it's pretty much all out. On the turns, I could see Grant and Brandon, and I breathe to my right side, so I could see them most of the time. I don't like getting picked off at the end of races, so you have to put your head down and finish," Magnan said.

The Patriot boys also won two relays against the Blue Eagles.

Brian Seitz, Trevor Watlington, Cameron Bell, and Shjon Watlington placed first in the 200 medley relay in 1:56.54, and Magnan, Brandon Burnette, Harrigan, and Conzola took first place in the 200 free relay in 1:35.44, winning by .34 seconds.

"We knew they stacked both free relays, and so did we. I had the lead, and we just held it the whole time, but it wasn't by much," said Magnan.

In the Patriots' meet against the Canaries, individual event winners for Freedom were Conzola in the 200 free with a time of 1:54.37 and the 100 free with a time of 50.43, Harrigan in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.57, Magnan in the 50 free with a time of 24.64 and the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.80, Shjon Watlington in the 500 free with a time of 5:21.53, and Trevor Watlington in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.22.

Freedom sophomore, John McGinty won the diving event with 149 points.
