LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

After a week off, LHS will be busy

Liberty wrestlers didn't have any wrestling action last week after their match against Nazareth was postponed because of a skin infection outbreak. That left the Hurricanes with days of practice without any competitive matters.

That will change this week when the Hurricanes, sporting a 13-1 dual meet mark, kick off the week Wednesday, weather permitting, in grand fashion when they travel to Bethlehem Catholic (7-0, 5-0).

It's another yearly meeting with the Karam brothers, as Jody and Becahi head coach Jeff Karam, renew their rivalry. With the Hawks being slated as heavy favorites, Jody understands the circumstances for his squad heading into the showdown with the Lehigh Valley's top team.

"On paper, they're heavily favored in a lot of matches," said Jody of Becahi. "You want to take positives away from any match and this one is no different. It's only a big match because we're having a good season, but you always want to beat your brother too."

Liberty's 4-0 mark in the Lehigh Valley Conference is also on the line, as the Hawks and Hurricanes are the last remaining teams in the league to have undefeated LVC marks.

After Becahi dismantled Northampton 49-10 last Wednesday, Liberty dealt with a week of practice, which has assuredly left the Hurricanes chomping at the bit to get some real action on the mats.

Their layoff leaves them with a week of packed action, as they take on Whitehall (14-6) Thursday night and close out the weekend with their rivalry match against Freedom (15-7) Saturday night.

"It was tough to keep the kids excited for practice all week," said Karam, "but we kept things exciting for them. Now, we obviously have three matches this week and they'll be excited about that. Whenever you take on some of your city rivals, it's always going to be an exciting time."

Freedom is looking to get back on track this week after they got handed losses from traditional league powers Parkland and Easton last week.

Parkland topped the Pates 37-22 and Easton handed them a 58-13 defeat two days later. Freedom traveled to the Juniata Duals over the weekend and came home with a 3-2 record, topping Trinity (67-9), West Perry (64-15) and Biglerville (42-28), but losing to Towanda 38-24 and Hamburg 53-15.

Freedom hosts Nazareth (6-2) tonight before their Saturday match with Liberty.

Last week's issue of the Bethlehem Press mistakingly identified the photo of the Liberty wrester as Orlando Miller when it was Noah Klingborg. The Press regrets the error.
