Girls have win streak going
It's been a busy week for the Whitehall girls basketball team. But don't worry, a hectic schedule appeals to them as witnessed by the results.
The Zephs have currently won two consecutive games, and four out of their last five. Tuesday's 33-26 win over Dieruff High School now raises their record to 4-7
Even with their loss to the Green Hornets on Friday night, head coach Dwight Repsher said they've displayed consistent improvement which has been the key to their resurgence.
In the game against Emmaus, the visiting Hornets bolted out to a 19-9 lead. While that deficit may have crippled them in the beginning of the season, Repsher said the team went on a 14-0 run to go up by four heading into halftime. He said they just stuck together, weathering that Emmaus onslaught, and then answering with a run of their own.
Unfortunately, they were unable to sustain that lead, eventually succumbing to the Hornets down the stretch, losing 40-37 to their Lehigh Valley Conference counterparts.
Still, their ability to overcome that early adversity, and then be in position to win once the fourth quarter began was something they can build on.
"I thought that it was probably our best game of the season," said Repsher.
The Zephs got solid contributions from a host of players in that game, including Jillian Rex who led the team with 12 points. Ashley Barber finished with seven points, while Ivanna Jones added five and Karly Klein chipped in with four.
The Zephs bounced right back with a game the next day against East Stroudsburg South High School. Repsher said it was an uphill battle most of the night, with the Zephs only capturing the lead for a brief period during the entire contest.
However, one of those times was late in the fourth quarter as they executed a designed play that resulted in a Barber field goal to give them the lead, 43-42.
After East Stroudsburg South called time out with about six seconds remaining, Repsher asked his team about how they wanted the handle the Cavalier's final possession.
"I said, 'we're up by one, and we need a stop defensively. How do you want to play this, and they said man-to-man,'" said Repsher.
The Zephs broke the huddle and denied the Cavs the game-winning shot, a confirmation of that decision.
Repsher said it can be beneficial to listen to what the team wants to do since it shows what they have confidence executing, especially in crunch time.
That win was another testament to their tenacity, not allowing the game to slip away even though they were behind for most of it.
"We battled, we kept our heads, and we hung tough," said Repsher. "That was a good win for us."
Repsher also said it was a good team effort, with everyone playing a big part in the win. He said Jill Kreglow hit a big jump shot down the stretch, while Barber, Rex, Jones, Klein, and LeAnna Cruz all made an impact on the outcome.
Taylor George also had a strong game at the point. She finished with a team-high 13 points.
The Zephs have been able to turn the corner by the combined efforts of everyone on their roster making contributions. Repsher said they're a team that relies on set plays to get players open, noting they don't have a player like ESS's Lisa Steakin who made five three-pointers en route to a 23-point performance. Everything is funneled through their offensive sets, and that gets everyone involved.
That unity helped them beat the Huskies on Tuesday night, downing their LVC foes 33-26. In that win, George once again paced the team with 16 points, while Rex added six, Jones chipped in with five, and Klein and Barber each had three.
Repsher said that they've been "hanging in there and battling," and that's been the foundation of their success. He said they now have some quality wins against some good teams and that should raise their confidence.
"I think we're making progress," said Repsher.
