Joseph D. McMillan

Joseph D. McMillan, 84, of Salisbury Township died Dec. 20, 2013, while a resident of Fellowship Manor, Whitehall. He was the husband of Lois Alder Dalrymple McMillan. Born in Chicago, Ill., he was a son of the late John L. and Jean (Currer) McMillan.

He was a graduate of Calumet High School, class of 1947.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1946 and served in Japan, Guam and Iwo Jima.

He attended Valparaiso University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1953. After graduation he was hired by Western Electric to work on the experimental DEW line in Alaska, staying with the project until 1960 as it extended across Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. He then transferred to the manufacturing division of Western Electric in North Andover, Mass., and later transferred to AT&T general departments, transmission engineering in New York City. Three years later he transferred to manufacturing in North Carolina. After two years he transferred to Reading, as manager of operating and in 1970 came to Western Electric-Allentown as director of engineering and operating. In 1978 he became director of engineering and operating at the Western Electric-Kansas City Works in Lee's Summit, Mo. While at Kansas City he attended the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, class of 1979. He retired in 1984. After retirement he received his professional engineer license.

He was a lifelong pilot of commercial and multi-engine ratings. He was a flight instructor and taught many students in Reading, Allentown and Kansas City. Col. He was an active member of the Civil Air Patrol, commander of the Missouri Wing and the North Central Region and national chief of staff. He participated in many search/rescue and search/recovery missions. He was an active member of the Midwest Navioneers and enjoyed fly-ins. He also enjoyed cowboy action shooting with groups in both Kansas and Missouri.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Diana and her husband Rob Winett, of Lewisburg and Lauren and her husband John Openlander, of St. Louis, Mo.; brother, Ian and his wife Dorcas, of Elmhurst, Ill.; grandchildren, Caleb, Ashley, Joshua, Eli; three great-grandchildren; stepson, John Dalrymple and partner Paul Ciempola, of Jersey City, N.J. He was predeceased by a brother, Hugh; sister, Christine; stepson, James Zellner Jr.
