Hawks stay on top of wrestling scene
It shouldn't be a surprise when it comes to Bethlehem Catholic having success on the wrestling mat, but the Golden Hawks showed last week that they are still kings of the Lehigh Valley following their resounding 40-17 home thumping over Nazareth last Wednesday.
The Hawks won 10 of 14 bouts, getting bonus points in five matches to walk away undefeated at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in LVC action, as they run into the rest of their season in the drivers seat for the LVC title, since they don't wrestle Parkland this season.
"It was surprising that we won in the fashion that we did," said head coach Jeff Karam about the win. "Our kids really prepared well for it all week and you could sense it in the room. They were very receptive of what we asked of them all week and it paid off."
The Hawks jumped out to a 17-0 advantage after the first four bouts when Zeke Moisey continued his torrid start to the season with a fall over Brock Wilson in 3:38.
Tyrone Klump (132) got Nazareth on the board with a 5-1 decision over Stephen Maloney, as Nazareth would win three of four bouts in the middle weights to draw within 20-11, which would be the closest the Blue Eagles would come all night.
Adam Soldridge's 16-0 technical fall over Ricky Fornaciari at 160 kept Becahi hammering away, as the Hawks won five of the last six bouts, with Nazareth's only other victory coming with a forfeit at 195.
"We have a pretty good dual meet team, but you never really know until you wrestle a team like this," said Karam. "I was curious to see how we would respond and our guys wrestled hard all night. We were fortunate to get momentum and get on a roll. I think that really carried us."
Becahi looks for that momentum to carry into this week's tilt against Northampton (4-2, 4-1) before they head off to Council Rock South this weekend for the Escape the Rock tournament.
"It's definitely a tough tournament and we didn't compete in it last year because we went to California," said Karam. "We want to finish in the top three and have a shot at winning it, even though we know that's going to be difficult since Blair [Academy] is in it. We've had three guys win this before [Darian Cruz, Randy Cruz and Elliott Riddick], but I'd like to see some other guys bring home titles this weekend too."
