Hawks and Hurricanes face tough week ahead
Mike Frew feels his team is coming together at this point of the season and if there's any time for a basketball team to gel, it's mid-January.
The Hawks, winners of two straight heading into this week, look to continue that move forward as they headed into last night's cross divisional LVC tilt against Nazareth (6-5, 2-2).
Becahi (5-6, 2-3) drew closer to the .500 mark with victories over Stroudsburg and Northampton last week, the latter a 57-52 much-needed LVC road win on Friday night.
With Becahi registering two wins over the past week, that trend will need to continue with a three game slate this week, which could keep momentum moving in a positive direction, or could have them clawing their way to get above .500.
"We've been playing pretty good basketball as of late and that's because guys are buying into the team concept," Frew said. "They're playing defense, rebounding, and playing team basketball. That's what we're going to need moving forward if we want to be successful."
While Frew admitted that this year's group needed some time to adjust to each other as a unit on the court, the time to have relapse episodes have expired.
Nazareth, who just beat Freedom last week, has proved to be a challenge any night and the slate of teams in the LVC have proven that no games will be an easy task.
The Hawks host Whitehall (8-3, 4-1) on Friday night and then have their make-up game against Allen (7-3, 3-1) on Saturday afternoon.
Splitting at least two of those games is going to be vital for Bethlehem Catholic this week, as this week's schedule is proving to be paramount.
"We track our own stats and everything is trending up for us," Frew said. "We're improving everyday as a team and that's what we need to do from here on out. We've had a very difficult schedule up to this point and have lost some close games, but we're playing our style of basketball now and playing to our strengths."
Liberty (6-4, 2-3) might have more of a cushion with six wins so far, but the Hurricanes can't afford any slides either.
Coming off a 68-52 loss to Allen last Friday, the Hurricanes are victims of three straight losses dating back to their holiday tournament.
They face a brutal three-game stretch this week as well, as they took on state ranked Central Catholic (11-0, 5-0) Tuesday night and then have to battle a resurgent Dieruff (5-4, 1-4) team that just lost to Parkland in overtime last week.
They close out the week with a back-to-back game against the Trojans (9-1, 4-1) on Saturday.
