Nace takes seat on Catty school board

The Catasauqua Area School Board has a new face.

Christine Nace, of Catasauqua, was administered the oath of office at the board's reorganizational meeting last month. She will serve a four-year term on the board.

Nace replaced former board member Sally Reiss, who lost a re-election bid.

She is no stranger to school district affairs. Since her family moved to Catasauqua 18 years ago, she has been actively involved in the education and extracurricular activities of her two children, James, a 2009 graduate of Catasauqua High School, and daughter Katherine, currently a senior at CHS.

Over the course of nearly two decades, Nace has volunteered inside the classroom at Sheckler Elementary School and served on the Home ler Elementary School and served on the Home and School Association at the elementary school. She also volunteered as a chaperon and classroom mother.

"I enjoyed all of the time that I spent serving in those positions," Nace told The Press last week.

Before residing in the Lehigh Valley, Nace and her husband, Rod, lived in Alaska, Colorado, Maine and southern Pennsylvania.

Although Nace said she and her husband looked at other area school districts when considering a move, such as Whitehall and Parkland, she said they were particularly drawn to Catasauqua.

"We picked Catasauqua as our hometown specifically because of the size and reputation of the school district," she said. "As a family we felt Catty was the place for us."

The high value she places on education and her desire to give back motivated Nace to run for a school board position.

"I wanted to give my time and talents to the school district as best I could and running for a board seat seemed to make perfect sense," she said.

Nace's goals as a school board member are simple.

"I plan to serve with honesty and integrity, using common sense as the backbone for decision making and ideas," she said.

Nace recommends those interested in serving the community consider elected office or participating in the political process.

"Everyone has an idea or opinion that could benefit the community as a whole," she added.

In her free time, Nace spends time with her family and dog, Palmer. The Naces are also active members of Bethany United Methodist Church, Catasauqua.

Also joining Nace as a newly elected board member is Duane Deitrich, who was appointed by the board in 2012 to fill a vacancy and was elected for a two-year term in the November 2013 election.

Penny Hahn, Donald Panto and Carol McCarthy, all incumbents, also won and were sworn in last month to serve four-year terms.
