Girls get back on track

The Zephyr girls basketball team has found a head of steam, winning consecutive games that has put them back on track.

In Saturday's contest, they defeated Pine Grove 39-31. They used the same formula that allowed them to beat Pocono Mountain West High School, sticking to their game plan and overcoming adversity to notch their second win of the season.

Head coach Dwight Repsher said they lead through most of the game, but suddenly found themselves in the midst of a Cardinals run that had them trailing at the end of three quarters, 22-21.

Repsher said they had some opportunities during that span to pad their lead as the third quarter was drawing to a close, but missed some lay-ups that opened the door for Pine Grove.

However, that's when they showed their resolve, making sure that they wouldn't crumble when the Cardinals took the lead.

"The kids, again, kept their heads and made shots," said Repsher. "That was a good win for us."

He said it's been a big part of the last two wins, and each time they responded by adhering to the game plan and not panicking or playing to their opponents' strengths.

"When they've encountered adversity, we've kept our heads and did what we were supposed to do," Repsher said.

He said they've been reacting well to those situations, a sign of maturity among his young team.

Repsher said a lot of players contributed to the win, with six players breaking into the scoring column.

Taylor George and Karly Klein paced the Zephs with 10 points apiece. Repsher said that Klein had her best game of the season, hitting a big three-pointer at the end of the second quarter that really helped them just before the break.

George also played well, running the offense and getting into the offensive flow.

"Taylor played lights out running the point," Repsher said.

The Zephs also got some strong rebounding, as Jillian Kreglow was a force, according to Repsher.

"She played really tough on the boards," said Repsher.

Also making her presence felt was Jill Rex who "made a couple of big shots," finishing with seven points.

Repsher said that center Ashley Barber was a difference maker down the stretch, scoring all her points in the fourth quarter. Barber finished with six points.

Additionally, Ivanna Jones had two points, and LeAnna Cruz knocked down four.

"Everybody contributed," said Repsher. "They're getting to the point where they're believing in themselves a little bit."

The win also underscored how ell they've played defensively this season. Repsher said they've kept opponents to approximately 35 ppg this season, another positive aspect on which they can build.

"We've really been playing well defensively," said Repsher.

He said they're a confident bunch defensively and that's allowed them to stay in most games this season.

Another important message Repsher stresses is that in every game there are certain things they can control, and certain things that are out of their control. He said it's important to identify what they can control and then focus on that aspect of the game.

They'll miss shots, they may get a bad call, a player may get injured, but they do have the power to determine certain facets between the white lines.

"We can control our effort and how we play defensively," said Repsher.

He said it's important not to let the things that can't control derail them and prevent them from doing what they want to do.
