Robert J. Donchez was sworn in as mayor in a brief ceremony within the densely-packed City Hall Rotunda Monday morning. The rite was performed by Northampton County Court of Common Pleas President Judge Stephen Baratta.

Following nearly two decades on city council, including two terms as president, Donchez is now settling into office as Bethlehem's 11th mayor.

Beginning his somewhat nasally remarks with a quip about avoiding decongestants before speeches, Donchez called Bethlehem the jewel of the Lehigh Valley and promised a commitment to public safety and economic growth. He said Bethlehem remains a city in transition, and pride in our steel-making history can now be reflected in pride as a nationally-recognized seat of entertainment and commerce.

Donchez said his emphasis will be on improving the lives of people in the neighborhoods, but the momentum of revitalization cannot be lost. "I stand here today to tell you as mayor I will bring all of the powers of the office to bear so that we can continue to bring responsible companies and high-paying jobs to Bethlehem."

Donchez continued, "In order to avoid the fate of so many other Pennsylvania cities, I will continue to promote the economic renaissance of Bethlehem on the Southside and anywhere in the city that we can find opportunities to grow our economy, and all the while maintaining the quality of life that has made this city a shining star."
