Carjacking occurs in township

The Whitehall Township Police Department responded to a carjacking Jan. 5 at the Whitehall Mini Mart, 3690 Lehigh St.

According to the criminal complaint, at 8:40 a.m. the victim was approached by Richard J. Bauer Jr., of the 1300 block of Crestwood Road, Bethlehem, asking for a ride to the Giant Food Store in Whitehall.

In the 2600 block of Range Road, Bauer brandished a knife and demanded the victim's wallet and cell phone. Bauer then demanded the victim drive him to ATMs to retrieve cash, the complaint says.

The request for cash was unsuccessful, causing the suspect to demand the victim drive to Lowe's in Whitehall. At Lowe's, the suspect forced the victim to make a purchase to receive cash from the cashier, which was also unsuccessful, the complaint says.

The suspect then had the victim drive to Whitehall High School, where he forced the victim out of the vehicle and fled the scene with the automobile, the complaint says.

The vehicle and suspect were later located in Allentown, according to the complaint.

Bauer later ran a red light at North Eighth and West Union streets, colliding with a sedan, injuring two women and a toddler. Bauer was also injured in the accident, the complaint says.

Bauer is currently facing 20 charges, including robbery, robbery of a vehicle, aggravated assault, theft, receiving stolen property, fleeing or attempting to elude police, criminal mischief, unlawful restraint, possession of a weapon, terroristic threats, unauthorized use of an automobile, simple assault, resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless endangerment, driving under the influence and reckless driving.

The incident is currently being investigated by the Lehigh County Auto Theft Task Force.
