LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Boys top Hurricanes

The Whitehall High School boys basketball team's success this season has been the product of a good balancing act.

Now, they aren't incorporating aspects of Cirque du Soleil into their basketball game. No flips or cartwheels for this bunch (not yet, anyway). The Zephs balancing comes on the stat sheet.

In Saturday's win over Liberty High School, the Zephyrs had three players in double figures, with two more on the cusp of that mark, en route to a 57-53 win over the Hurricanes.

With that win they remain undefeated in the Lehigh Valley Conference (4-0), and now have seven victories as they get into the meat of their league schedule.

They needed that balance in overcoming a third quarter deficit that had them trailing by six points. Whitehall was leading throughout the first half, but the 'Canes came out in the third with some torrid shooting, outscoring them by nine points.

As the third quarter was about to come to a close, Jacob Meyers stepped up and hit a big three, cutting their lead in half. That bucket was followed by another trey to start the fourth quarter and the game was tied.

It's that type of unflappability that's propelled the Zephs into first place in the North Division of the LVC.

"One of the things we have is resilience," said Jones. "When we've needed baskets, when we've been down, we've found a way to make baskets."

That's been a hallmark this season for the Zephs who have gotten strong play from their roster, especially down the stretch.

Meyers finished with 11 points, part of that balancing mix that's been vital this season. He connected on three treys, keeping the 'Canes from clogging the lane.

Senior swingman Aaron Keglovits had another strong floor game, chipping in with 11 points.

Point guard Chad Rex also had an impact down the stretch, scoring four of his eight points in that final frame to help seal the victory.

Jones said the reason they've been able to play well in crunch time is because of experience. This group is a year older, with co-captains Keglovits and Matt Melosky keeping everything on an even keel. Melosky finished with nine points, helping the team both on the offensive and defensive ends.

They also have great contributors off the bench with Jake Buskirk ( 2 pts.), Saquon Barkley (1 point), Marques Esquilin, Ryan Bonshak ( 2 pts), Seth Rissmiller and Mustafa Mitchell all providing valuable minutes on the floor.

Once again center Brett Radocha led the way, scoring 13 points. Jones said that Radocha is averaging 14.4 points per game, and his offensive consistency is a major factor in their success this season. He's also been dynamite on the boards, leading the team in rebounding as well.

With their success so far this season in league action, Jones said they're mindful that it's still early and there's lots of basketball to play. He said they'll take each game as it comes, with the admonition to his players that they can't take a night off.

Jones also said their success has been rooted in their ability to pay attention to detail. That has carried over from practice to the games, and that's helped them stay atop the division.
