LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Wrestling battles continue in Bethlehem

It's a big week of wrestling for every Bethlehem school and Freedom and Liberty aren't exempt from the party.

The Hurricanes (8-1, 3-0) tangle with Easton (5-1, 1-1) tonight, while the Patriots (7-1, 2-0) take on Northampton (2-2, 2-1).

It's a tale of two matches that have been dominated by the latter opponent, but Freedom hopes to have an opportunity to pull off the upset against the K-Kids.

"I don't think we've beaten Northampton since the pre-Don Rohn era," said Freedom head coach Brandon Hall, who guesses its been close to three decades since the Pates have knocked off Northampton. "They have some studs in their lineup, but if we want to win some of these matches against top teams, we can't give up four or five pins and expect to win."

Northampton just got bulldozed by Phillipsburg 51-17 over the weekend, where all three of their Hurricane Holiday Wrestling Classic finalists (Michael Scheetz, 113; Zach Valley, 126; Bobby Fehr, 170) posted wins over the Stateliners, but not much help came from the rest of their teammates.

The Kids edged the Pates 32-27 last year and Hall downplayed the opportunity that his program has in front of them about beating Northampton, but make no mistake about it, Northampton is there for the taking.

"I hope we can get five or six kids that can get bonus points for us," said Hall. "We need bonus points if we're going to win this match. It's definitely going to be the difference in the match if we can get bonus and minimize how much bonus we give up. All the kids know this is a big match for us, but we can't make this any bigger than it already is."

Liberty faced a 44-21 defeat at Easton a year ago and will look to close that gap against the Rovers this time around. Whether they will be able to do it is up for debate.

Both, Liberty and Freedom will then make the trip down to the Virginia Duals on Thursday following their meets to participate in the Virginia Duals, where they'll both be paired up in the American Division. Liberty took second place last year in the American Division, while Freedom faced a tough trip, going 1-2.

The 'Canes open up against Ocean Lakes at 5 p.m. Friday, while Freedom takes on Great Bridge at 7 p.m. Friday.

"I don't think anybody is looking past Easton and thinking about the Va. duals," said Liberty head coach Jody Karam. "At the end of the day, it's Easton and it's the only school I haven't defeated in my 21 years at Liberty."

Both schools could run into each other if they reach the finals or battle in the consolations, but having tough dual meets a night before leaving is certainly good preparation for their trip down south.

"Hopefully, we have a better showing than we did a year ago," Hall said. "We didn't wrestle for about two weeks before the Virginia Duals last year because of a skin infection issue and it really hurt us going into that tournament. I think we'll be set up better this time around."
