Liberty swimmers knock off Southern Lehigh

Liberty High School's girls swim team defeated Southern Lehigh 93-77 on Saturday afternoon, the first swim meet for the Hurricanes since Dec. 19.

Liberty girls captain, Shelby Turner, said, "We knew it would be close. We estimated 20 points we could win by."

Individual event winners for Liberty were Kayla Drago in the 200 free with a time of 2:01.89 and the 100 free with a time of 56.61, Julia McCarthy in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.15 and the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.53, and Jocelyn Baker in the 500 free with a time of 5:35.37.

Emily Cecchini, also a Liberty captain, said, "A lot of band kids came back [from the Rose Parade] today, so we were impressed with how we swam without being in the pool for a week."

The Hurricanes knew, however, that a lack of sleep and no practice could have taken a bigger toll.

"As a captain, we had to keep the energy up, even though people came back an hour before. We just kept getting people up and cheering them on," said Liberty captain, Alexis Brenner.

Liberty's girls also won the 200 free relay as Baker, McCarthy, Drago, and Anita Kundu combined to place first with a time of 1:45.61.

The Hurricane boys also defeated the Spartans 91-79.

Liberty opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay as Sean Vannata, Nolan Vannata, Reid Rossi, and Jacob Jones took first place with a time of 1:48.31.

"My 100 fly on the relay is where I want to be with it, and I think I'm in a position to drop a lot of time from there," said Liberty captain, Sean Vannata.

Later in the meet, the Hurricanes took second and third place in the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay.

"The relays really helped us. At the half, [the score] was tied, and we came back [after diving] and pushed even harder," said Liberty captain, Brandon Merkert.

Individual event winners for Liberty were Jacob Jones in the 100 free with a time of 51.99, and Sean Vannata in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.74.

The Hurricanes, however, made up for a lack of first place finishes in individual events by winning second, third, and fourth places.

Liberty boys captain, Alex Medellin, said, "We knew if we didn't have the bulk of the team [because of the band trip], it would be a lot tougher. We won because we have a lot of depth."
