Reenock reaches out to mayors, state

Northampton Mayor Thomas Reenock, representing the 958 mayors across the state as president of the Association of Mayors of the Boroughs of Pennsylvania, is reaching out to his colleagues.

"Today's mayors have many titles, roles and wear many hats in performing their duties as community leaders, policy-makers, peace makers, administrators and visionaries in helping our communities move forward," Reenock said in a letter to state mayors. "We set our goals to provide our residents, the taxpayers of the borough, the highest quality of services we can provide for the least effective cost."

Reenock, elected to a two-year term as association president in July 2013, said mayors should support legislation that enhances the quality of borough government. Such goals can be met by leadership and participation, Reenock said.

Northampton Borough Council members have urged Reenock to bring the association's conference to the borough. They said his role as president brings prestige to the borough.

Reenock said the Association of Mayors has six principal purposes: developing a closer official and personal relationship among its many members, promoting unity in matters pertaining to the duties of mayors, exchanging of information, working toward closer cooperation with borough government and other organizations, preserving and promoting the office of mayor and actively promoting and lobbying for progressive legislation in the best interests of the communities the mayors represent.

The association offers a forum where mayors meet to work on the day to day needs of the boroughs and develop relationships with the state association.

"We are positioned to work with the various statewide organizations to lobby for legislative changes that benefit mayors and the issues that concern them," Reenock said.

The association, founded in 1911, represents mayors whose communities, combined, have over 2.6 million residents.
