Girls pick up first victory
To combat Pocono Mountain's West's chaotic tempo on the basketball floor, head coach Dwight Repsher used their pre-game walk through to remind his team to stick to their game plan.
"I've seen them play, and what West tries to get you caught up in how they want to play," said Repsher. "It's chaos. They run up and down the floor and you can't get caught up in that."
Repsher utilized that time before the game, as well as a time out during the contest, to reinforce that message of playing their game which helped catapult the Zephyrs to their first win, downing the Panthers 35-27.
It was a moment to savor in a season that's been a bit rocky.
"That was a nice win," said Repsher. "We needed a win, no matter what, but we really played well. I was very pleased."
He was also pleased by the way his team responded after the Panthers cut the lead to two points with about six minutes left in the game. That's when they showed the ability to fight through some adversity and not panic. He said they got back to the brand of basketball that they talked about before the game.
"We kept our heads, kept our composure, and ran what we were supposed to run," said Repsher.
Repsher said that because they're a young team, they have to guard against reverting back to playing the style your opponent wants to play in the heat of the game.
"They didn't do that, and we won," he said.
The Zephs relied on the cool head of point guard Taylor George who helped guide the team to victory with her floor leadership. She led the way with 13 points.
"She shot the ball fairly well," said Repsher. "She really did a great job running the floor."
They also benefited from the inside play of Ashley Barber and Jillian Kreglow.
Repsher said that both players rebounded the ball well, making sure the Panthers didn't extend their possessions. Barber and Kreglow also contributed offensively, with Barber dropping in four, while Kreglow finished the game with two points.
Additionally, Repsher said that Jillian Rex had a good floor game, finishing with 11 points. She was another important offensive cog in the win.
Also scoring for the Zephs was Karly Klein (2 points) and Taylor Hamscher (1 point).
Repsher said they showed a lot of positive signs in that win. They adapted and adjusted during the game, and they kept to the script as instructed before the game.
"Everything we talked about, we did," said Repsher. "That was the nice thing about that game."
With the win, the Zephs are now 1-6. They get back into league action this week with a game against Liberty High School this Friday.
