The Northampton Borough Council Dec. 19 adopted the final 2014 budget.
The approved budget amounts to nearly $6 million and includes a 0.4-mill tax increase, bringing the total millage to 8.50 mills.
Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said a resident with property assessed at $50,000 will pay $20 more annually in taxes for 2014.
Borough officials said the tax revenues generated help provide 24-hour a day police service, a state-of-the-art fire department, the recreation center and a top-notch park and playground system with new equipment.
It is estimated the borough will begin 2014 with a balance of $403,549. The balance is needed to help the borough remain afloat until real estate taxes monies for 2014 are received.
The $5,952,511 budget is expected to generate $2,998,222 in tax revenues and $1,120,000 in sanitation and health fees.
The sewer budget amounts to $1,487,200 and includes $10,000 to replace a defunct air conditioner at the waste water treatment plant office and $20,000 for minor upgrades to three pump stations.
Also included in the budget is $16,000 for the recreation center to replace aging fitness equipment. The budget also provides for a new police department vehicle, snow plow truck for the public works department and streets upgrades in all four wards.
Council members issued no comments on the adopted budget.
