Hurricanes have momentum working in their favor
Liberty got a boost of momentum following their 45-21 victory over Northampton last week and the Hurricanes hope they can use that this weekend when they host their 21st annual Hurricane Holiday Classic.
The Hurricanes (7-1) still had business to take care of on Monday, as they traveled to Wilson West Lawn for a difficult independent match, but knocking off the K-Kids for a second year in a row certainly was a nice gift for the program before the holiday season gets in gear.
"We definitely take pride in wins like that," said head coach Jody Karam of the win over Northampton. "It's always good when you can get a win over Northampton."
The win at Northampton marked the first time Liberty won at the home of the K-Kids in over two decades and was the third win over the Kids in Karam's 20-year tenure with the program.
Knocking off Wilson was the next step for Liberty before they become hosts this weekend, but the results of that match are past Press deadlines.
While looking ahead to this weekend, Karam hopes his team can finish in the top five and walk away with some medalists, most notably KJ Fenstermacher (113) and Jake Gunning (HWT).
Both wrestlers picked up pins over Northampton last week and give the Hurricanes their best shot at landing in the finals.
"We have a pretty balanced lineup, but I'm not sure how many guys we're going to have push through for medals," Karam said. "We expect KJ and Jake to do well and we'll see how our other guys respond."
This year's tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday with wrestling starting at 9am Saturday.
The second session will take place at 6pm that night, with semifinals set for 10:30am on Sunday.
The final session will take place at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Finals are slated for a 5 p.m. start.
