Stop sign to be installed

A busily traveled section at 16th and Franklin streets has prompted Northampton Borough Council to take action.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko reported to borough council he received a letter from a resident expressing concerns about safety at the intersection.

"I would like to recommend placing a stop sign on the northwest corner of 16th Street at Franklin Street," Zarayko said. "This should help alleviate any chance of an accident."

Council voted to install the stop sign.

In other business, when council meets tonight, Thursday, Dec. 19, it will vote on approving the borough's tentative $5,952,511 budget for 2014.

If the budget passes, the millage rate will increase from 8.1 mills to 8.5 mills. For a property assessed at $50,000 and appraised at $100,000, the property owner will see a $20 increase annual in taxes.

Increased health care costs and wage factors also are included in the budget.

Officials also announced the borough has vacancies on its UCC Board of Appeals. Interested citizens can apply for the positions by contacting the borough office.
