The Friendly Carolers were out in full force Sunday despite Saturday's snowstorm.
The group sought to spread holiday cheer and bring a smile to the faces of seniors at Fellowship Community, Whitehall, singing songs such as "Silent Night" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."
Alison Steventon, clutching a strap holding several bells, led the group in singing Christmas favorites.
Retired Whitehall High School teachers Judy and Dale Ott, of Egypt, also participated in the event.
"We've done this for more than a dozen years," Judy Ott said. "It all started about 1999 when we gathered a few close friends together to go caroling to shut-ins. Initially, churches and friends in the area were contacted for names of shut-ins."
Thus the name of the group, Friendly Carolers.
"We are friends and we carol," she added.
Over the years, the number of carolers increased to 30 or 40. Included in the group are men and women from all walks of life, retirees, stay-at-home moms and members of the workforce.
Caravanning across the township became a problem, Judy said. Santa, played by her husband, agreed.
The Otts said many of the carolers were not familiar with streets in the area. To resolve the problem, the group decided to make an annual event out of caroling at Fellowship Community.
"It brings joy to both the recipients and the carolers," Judy said. "On occasion, emotions run so high that tears flow from the listeners and singers. At the end of the evening, everyone feels the true meaning of Christmas."
Afterward, the group returns to the Ott household for a potluck dinner and more caroling throughout the neighborhood.
