Borough using up salt supply

The Borough of Northampton used 400 tons of road salt to melt the snow and ice during the winter storm this past weekend.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said at Monday's council meeting the borough has already used a larger than usual amount of salt.

"We should have enough salt for one more snow storm," Zarayko said.

The contractor who supplies the borough with salt told Zarayko a new supply will arrive shortly.

"We were paying $59 a ton for road salt," Zarayko said. "I believe it has gone up a couple of bucks a ton."

The task of removing snow was made more difficult over the weekend because snow was mixed with freezing rain.

Residents are reminded to shovel at least a three-foot path along their sidewalks following a snow storm.
