Steiner takes first in diving

Liberty diver, Rachel Steiner, surprised herself with a first place victory during the Hurricanes' swimming and diving meet against Parkland.

In fact, Steiner's score of 178.20 left plenty of room between her and Parkland's Maddy Hain.

"I wasn't expecting it at all, actually. She usually beats me in most meets, so it was a really good feeling," Steiner said.

Although Liberty diving coach, Jeff Zettlemoyer, believed that Steiner would beat Hain, the Hurricane senior was unhappy with herself at the time.

"I wasn't getting as high scores as I should have," she said.

Steiner began with a back dive straight, followed by a front one-and-a-half pike, and an inward one-and-a-half tuck. Her go-to dive, an inward dive pike, was next.

"That's been one of my better dives, and I can count on that to get a decent score. That's my favorite dive," she said.

Steiner's fifth dive was a front dive full twist straight, one of her best dives of the day.

"Judges don't like it that much because it's hard to stay straight, so when I do it, it's a good day, and I'm happy," she said.

Steiner's final dive was a reverse dive pike.

"When they announced the results, I was astonished. I wasn't expecting it," said Steiner.
