Liberty boys end 27-year losing streak to PHS

Liberty High School's boys swimming team broke a 27-year losing streak to Parkland, and defeated the Trojans 104-82 on Dec. 12, at Parkland High School.

"We were very excited to beat them. We felt like this was going to be the year to beat them because their boys took a hit this year," said Liberty junior, Jacob Jones.

The Hurricane boys led off with a win in the 200 medley relay. Sean Vannata, Nolan Vannata, Reid Rossi, and Jones placed first in 1:45.80.

"At the time I dove in, we were basically going to win," Jones said.

In individual events, Jones won the 50 free in 22.98.

"It was [a close race] with another swimmer on our team, Evan Smith," said Jones.

The Hurricanes also won the 200 free relay. Brandon Merkert, Brandon Hlavaty, Cole Ledger, and Smith placed first in 1:34.27.

Sophomore Hurricane, Nolan Vannata, won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.28.

Jones said, "[Parkland] swam well, but we had enough depth to win the meet. If they got first place, we got second and third."

Liberty's victory over the Trojans was also a huge win for Coach Reik Foust, also his first.

"He was really happy and that we swam really well in our second meet of the season. We were all very excited, and we all have a boosted morale for our upcoming meets," said Jones.

Prior to the Christmas break, Liberty will take on Whitehall and Easton.
