FHS wrestlers off to hot start this year

Freedom's wrestling team seems to have a different aura about them this season, but getting off to a 6-1 start will certainly do that for most teams.

The Patriots topped LVC foe Emmaus last week 29-28 and followed that up with a 32-28 win over Delaware Valley last Friday night as they head into their lone bout this week against Dieruff.

The 6-1 mark to the season ranks among the best start for Freedom in the four year tenure of head coach Brandon Hall, who is more than just happy with the results his team is producing.

"I'm happy with how things have started for us, but I'm even happier with how we're wrestling," he said. "I keep telling them to focus on the process and keep getting better. We've been doing that and we've been a much more physical team on the mat this year. From our tie-ups to our activity on our feet, we've become very aggressive and physical."

That aggressive mentality has helped the Pates capitalize on their opportunities at victory, as they used three bonus point victories in their criteria win over Emmaus and then earned four of those wins over Del Val, as Dylan Brown (113) scored a technical fall, while Thomas Byrnes (132), Jake Young (170) and John Callahan (182) each recorded falls.

"That's been part of the difference for us this year," said Hall about Freedom's repeated journey to the win column. "We're getting more bonus point victories and we're giving up less bonus point defeats. If you don't give up bonus points, it's always going to help your chances of winning."

With Dieruff being the final hurdle for Freedom heading into the Christmas break, Hall certainly feels better about his team at this point of the season, than where they were a year ago.

"I think the kids are going out and really wrestling hard," he said. "I think everyone has bought into what we're doing and I hope things continue to get better for us."
