'Canes get by Hawks
Liberty played 28 minutes of great basketball last Friday night at Bethlehem Catholic.
They proceeded to play a tumultuous final four minutes, as Bethlehem Catholic clawed their way back from a 12-point deficit, but not far enough, as Liberty held on for a 62-61 victory.
The win keeps the Hurricanes (2-0) undefeated on the season, as they head into a three game stretch this week before taking a break for the holidays.
The loss for Becahi (0-2) still has the Hawks searching for their first win, but it isn't for lack of effort.
After trailing by nine at halftime, Becahi amped up the pressure in the second half, scoring back-to-back buckets to end the third quarter and close their deficit to 38-33.
After a slow start to the fourth quarter, which saw Liberty extend their lead to as many as 12 points, the Hawks used an 18-6 run to even the contest at 53 apiece with over a minute left.
"We might not have a lot of experience with some of our returning guys, but playing in an overtime game and a last second game like this certainly helps us get experience," said Liberty head coach Chad Landis. "We didn't play well in those last four minutes and Becahi forced some turnovers, but we did good enough at the line to hold on."
With just over a minute left, a free throw show ensued, as KJ Williams was Liberty's man on the night at the charity stripe, hitting 13 of 14 from the line to lead all scorers with 27 points, as Liberty held a 61-56 advantage with 28 seconds left.
Jamal Aziz brought the Hawks within 61-58 with 15 seconds left on the clock. After Liberty converted one of two free throws on their next possession, a Freddie Simmons three-pointer made the game a 62-61 scenario with 3.7 seconds on the clock.
Liberty's tenuous ending to the contest continued, as Deron Seamon missed a pair of free throws to give the Hawks one last chance at the win.
That chance never came to fruition, as DeAndre Tillett's three-pointer at the buzzer didn't fall, allowing Liberty to escape and leave Becahi reeling.
Simmons led Becahi with 20 points, while Aziz poured in a healthy 19. Tillett closed out the double-digit scorers for the Hawks with 13 points.
Liberty's one-man show was Williams, who was clearly the best player on the floor and helped teammate Deshawn Oyeniyi's 15 point night become not as a detrimental, as those were the only two Hurricane scorers in double figures.
"KJ is an elite athlete and he can do things that most players in this league can't do," said Landis. "He was really good for us. Deshawn didn't have a great night, but he was still able to do enough around the rim to help us win."
Liberty takes that unblemished record of theirs into a week where they travel to Stroudsburg Wednesday night before capping off the week at Freedom (1-1) on Friday.
Becahi looks to get in the win column tonight against Freedom and hope to continue that on Friday against Easton.
The Hawks also travel to Conwell-Egan on Saturday afternoon.
