Cable fees to go up for residents

The Borough of Northampton has learned the monthly cable rates for RCN subscribers will increase.

At the Dec. 5 borough council meeting, borough Manager Gene Zarayko informed council of the pending increase in cable fees.

"We received notice from RCN that the basic cable rate will be going up $3 per month," Zarayko said. "If you have the signature cable plan, that will be increasing by $2 per month and high-speed Internet will also be increasing by $2 per month. For the average cable subscriber, this amounts to $84 per year."

Councilman Robert Coleman said he recalls paying $12 a month for his monthly cable bill.

RCN, previously known as Twin-County TV Cable, once had an office on Main Street in the borough. The company later moved its operation to East Allen Township.

In recent years, Service Electric TV Cable, which operates from Allentown, has slowly redeveloped its relationship with the borough offering cable services across the town.

The borough has not indicated if Service Electric will also increase its cable fees.
