LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

LHS, FHS open seasons 4-1

It was a positive start to the wrestling season for Liberty following a third-place finish at the Boyertown Duals last weekend.

The Hurricanes came away with a 4-1 mark, losing their only match to Boyertown, one of the top five 3A teams in the state, 43-6.

Liberty picked up victories over Council Rock North (55-9), Interboro (56-18), Dallas (56-14) and Owen J. Roberts (38-27).

The victory over Owen J. Roberts occurred in the third place final, a round after losing to Boyertown by a wide margin.

"Boyertown is one of the top ranked teams in the state this year, so we knew it would be tough," said Liberty head coach Jody Karam. "I'm happy with how we started. The kids are technically ahead of where we were a year ago, so that's a positive we take away from the tournament."

KJ Fenstermacher (113) was the lone Hurricane to come away with an undefeated mark at the tournament, finishing 5-0 with three falls and a major decision.

Luke Werner (106), Noah Klingborg (170), Jake Gunning (220) and Andrew Gunning (HWT) all went 4-1 on the weekend as well. Liberty's match against Northampton on Tuesday was postponed due to weather and won't see action again until next Wednesday against Central Catholic.

Freedom also jumped out to a 4-1 start to the season after finishing second at the Quakertown Duals.

Head coach Brandon Hall saw his troops fall to Stroudsburg 33-28 in the finals, but was more pleased with how his team competed this year, rather than when they took home first place a year ago.

"I was very unhappy with how we wrestled in the tournament last year because it's about the process," Hall said. "I didn't like how we finished last year, but this group of guys went out and competed. We have four freshmen and four sophomores in the lineup and I liked what I saw."

With wins over Plymouth-Whitemarsh, Quakertown, Upper Perkiomen and Neshaminy, three Freedom wrestlers came home undefeated from the tournament. Dylan Brown (113), Jonah Zyck (126) and Jake Young (170) were unblemished, while John Callahan (182) and Josh Newhart (HWT) each finished 4-1.

"It was a good weekend for guys like Jonah and Josh," said Hall, whose team will face Emmaus tonight and Delaware Valley Friday night. "Jonah was 4-18 a year ago and he's worked extremely hard in the offseason to get better. Josh hasn't wrestled since having shoulder surgery after states [last March] and he went out and did well, so I can take a lot of positives away from our performance."

Bethlehem Catholic opens the season tonight against Whitehall, which is expected to be a smooth victory, but things will get tough for the defending 2A state champions when they travel to Central Mountain this weekend for the King of the Mountain tournament. Featuring three of the top five teams in each PIAA classification, the Hawks will certainly be tested off the bat.

"It's a big challenge for us with 34 very good teams in the tournament," said Karam. "It's more like a mid-season tournament and we definitely have some young guys that are going to be thrown into the fire. I don't know what type of results I expect, but I'll disappointed if we don't finish in the top three."
