Northampton Community College

Diné College exchange student speak

For several years, NCC has had an exchange program with Diné College of the Navajo Nation, Ariz. Students from NCC's Intercultural communications class correspond and hold a student exchange with students from Diné.

In November, exchange students from Diné, including grandchildren of the Navajo Code Talkers who played a key role in Allied communications in the Pacific during World War II, spoke about their grandparents and showed video interviews with some of them.

Moravian College

Short story program Dec. 4

Award-winning writer Stephanie Powell Watts will present a free, open to the public reading and a talk, "The State of the American Short Story," at 8 p.m. Dec. 4 in the UBC room, Haupert Union Building, north campus. She is associate professor of English at Lehigh University. She was a recipient of the Whiting Writers' Award, the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence, and was a finalist for The Hemingway Foundation /PEN Award, the Chautauqua Prize, the John Gardner Short Story Award, the Foreword Review Prize and USABookNews.com. Her work chronicles the lives of young African-Americans who come from, or live near, the "dark houses out on tangled dirt roads on the fringes of the county."

The event is sponsored by the Arts & Lectures Committee and the English Department, and hosted by the students in Dr. Joyce Hinnefeld's English 343Z (American Fiction after World War II) class.
