Triad supports Project Lifesaver in the Lehigh Valley

On Nov. 12, Triad (The Right Information and Direction) held its monthly meeting in the Lehigh County Senior Center, 1633 Elm St., Allentown.

Triad seeks to educate senior citizens and those who work with them about pertinent issues affecting older people on a daily basis. Triad meetings provide opportunities to access first-hand information from experts. Topics range from available community services to health care concerns. Meetings are open to the public.

Currently, Triad's co-chairs, Martha Lieberman and Linda Lewis, are working to promote Project Lifesaver and to establish Triad's role in support of the program.

According to organization literature, Project Lifesaver International is "a public safety program designed to protect and locate missing persons due to wandering."

Project Lifesaver serves clients and families affected by Alzheimer's, autism, Down Syndrome and developmental disorders.

Martha Lieberman, who has been instrumental in bringing Project Lifesaver to the Lehigh Valley, Allentown Police Lt. Bill Reinik and other officers from the Allentown and Bethlehem police departments received Project Lifesaver training in November.

Allentown Police Capt. Daryl Hendricks will oversee the Allentown branch of the program until his retirement in January, 2014, when Reinik will assume the leadership role.

Lieberman actively promotes Project Lifesaver at health fairs and speaking engagements. She emphasizes community members have already contacted her about participating in the program. According to Leiberman, "I've got two [clients] that wanted it [enrollment] yesterday."

In addition, five home care association representatives have requested information on Project Lifesaver services.

The equipment required to operate Project Lifesaver will be stored in the Allentown and Bethlehem communications centers so it is immediately and consistently available. Grant money covers the cost of implementing the program. Triad members are considering forming a grant committee and assigning a coordinator to provide continued future financial support for the project.

Triad serves senior citizens and encourages senior citizens to serve the community.

The next meeting will convene at the Lehigh County Senior Center 4 p.m. Dec. 10.

The meeting presentation will feature Allentown Police Department's K-9 Unit.

Triad affords senior citizens the opportunity to explore interesting topics and to enjoy meaningful involvement. As Lewis states, "Small groups of people can make a difference."

Interested seniors are invited to attend.
