MACUNGIE BOROUGH COUNCIL Preliminary budget approved

The 2014 preliminary budget was voted on and approved for advertising at the Dec. 2 Macungie Borough Council meeting.

Working toward balancing the budget, the line item for the $30,000 sewer and water lines was removed. The budget also includes a $4,000 capital asset for the sale of a police car. With these adjustments and a tax increase, the budget is $28,660 out of balance.

The fire department financials will not be available until mid-January, 2014. The fire department is within its budget for the use of fuel. Fuel bills have been requested by Tim Romig under the right-to-know policy.

Mayor Gary Cordner said the police budget is not out of line.

David Boyko requested roads under construction be returned to their original condition, not just patched.

A certificate of appreciation was awarded to Jean Nagle for seven years of dedicated service on council.

A certificate of appreciation was awarded to Joseph Sikorski for nine years of service on council.

Donald Young, a property owner on Lumber Street, chose not to add a sewer line which was not in the original contract. It is a major expense and not needed. According to council, it is a new street and should have new water and sewer lines.

Brookfield development residents received letters individually specifying violations in the easements with sheds and fences. Not everyone received a letter noting a problem. Most property owners with violations did not obtain a permit when adding the shed or building the fence. New letters detailing the obstruction are being sent out as well as clarificatoin for those who did not have a problem. If a fence was constructed without a permit, the letter will specify a date the problem should be resolved by.

Cordner said the holiday tree lighting will be Dec. 10.

The Sheeprock Trek was held on Thanksgiving Day with about 150 people in attendance.

Borough Manager Chris Boehm will investigate the ADA ramp at the railroad crossing.

An ordinance to re-establish and relocate Lumber Street was voted on and approved.
