EMMAUS BOROUGH COUNCIL Borough passes preliminary budget with a projected tax hike

Emmaus Borough Council passed the proposed 2014 budget which contains an increase in taxes.

"There are going to be a lot more projects being done [in 2014]," Councilman Nate Brown said at the Dec. 2 meeting.

Brown said the borough will complete the 10th Street culvert, repair North Street near Emmaus High School, purchase two new police cars and dump trucks this year.

"I want to let the public know this is what you are spending your money on; roads, services and public safety," Brown said.

Councilman Wesley Barrett said the borough has been putting off projects for years and will begin to complete some of the much needed road work in 2014.

A home worth $150,000 will see a $118 increase in taxes if the borough runs according to the proposed budget.

The proposed budget includes a projected $12,737,744 in revenue and $12,549,006 in expenditure.

Council also voted to reduce the price of visiting the Emmaus Community Pool at the meeting. The prices will revert back to the 2012 model with children under five receiving free admittance. Nonresidents will pay $7 for children six to 17, $8 for adults and $3 for senior citizens.

The weekend resident rate will be $6 for children six to 17, $7 for adults and $3 for senior citizens.

The weekday resident rate will be $5 for children six to 17, $6 for adults and $3 for seniors.

Each borough home will also pay $306 for refuse and a $6 compost site fee in 2014.
