LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Conzola returns to lead Pates

Freedom High School's swimming team will consist of a combination of club swimmers and high school swimmers for the 2013-2014 season.

Head coach Jon Larson said, "Freedom is unique in that we have kids from all four major clubs in the Lehigh Valley. That can turn into a tug-of-war between club and high school, but I think it's a perfect balance. High school provides the best competition."

New to the Patriots, Larson is expecting an adjustment period.

"No two coaches coach the same. Training-wise, we're going through terminology, and that takes some time," he said.

Key returners for the Patriots include PIAA state champion, Peter Conzola, Sam Magnan, Connor Harrigan, Helen Hsu, Shannon Howell, and Carly DelFranco.

Larson said that although the team is pretty evenly distributed age-wise, there are not many seniors on the team.

Larson will work with the Patriots on improving their times, while keeping an eye on the competition.

"In high school, you have to look at who else is out there. You can only try to train them to put them in the best position. Some are at a beginner's level and will be reaching just to qualify for districts. I want to train them to get a goal, and then hopefully place," said Larson.

Freedom's first dual meet is scheduled for Dec. 6 at home against Emmaus.

Larson said, "I'm looking forward to the strategy of putting together dual meet lineups. I'm a little anxious about [Dec. 6]."

Larson is also hoping to expand his swimmers' interest in other events this season.
