LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Becahi still has talent, but a bit more intriguing

What do you get with a program that has won three straight PIAA wrestling team titles?

A team that wants to win four straight.

That's the continued tradition that Bethlehem Catholic hopes to build on this season. Head coach Jeff Karam has built quite a legacy in his six years as boss of the Hawks, compiling a 90-12 record, but one thing he lost for the first time during his tenure at Becahi is a Cruz in the wrestling room.

With Randy, Richie and Darian Cruz coming through the program over the years, they've always established a sense of consistency.

Without that this year, the Hawks may be a bit more intriguing, but certainly won't be lacking in talent.

With seven state qualifiers back in the lineup, Karam returns a healthy lineup this winter for a program that completed the team trifecta last season by claiming the Lehigh Valley Conference title, District XI 2A team title and the PIAA 2A team championship.

"I tell my guys they haven't achieved anything yet," Karam said. "This is a new team with new goals. As in the past three years, we would like to compete for the league title, being this will be the last year with these teams, districts (individual and team) and states (individual and team)."

Luke Karam (D-1st, R- 1st, S-2nd), Stephen Maloney (D-3rd, R-5th, SQ), Zeke Moisey (D-1st, R-3rd, S-2nd), Lee Todora (D-1st, R-4th, SQ), Nick Cortopassi (D-2nd, R-5th, SQ), Jose Ortiz (D-1st, R-3rd, SQ) and Andrew Dunn (D-1st, R-4th, S-6th) bring back the most experience and medals from last year's team.

They'll be complemented by Joey Gould, Cole Karam, Tony Lombardo, Noah Manning, Mason Angstadt, Adam Soldridge, Andrew Haldaman, Brandon Gallagher and Ryan Johnson.

With Nazareth, Parkland and Easton expected to challenge the Hawks for the Lehigh Valley Conference crown, Karam knows that the bull's-eye continues to grow on the Hawks.

"I have a good group of returning letter winners along with a strong group of guys coming up from junior high," Karam said. "They have worked extremely hard throughout the offseason. It's probably the best year I had with turnout for offseason workouts. We also return a good group of kids with leadership qualities.

"We need the younger guys to grow up quickly. Schedule is extremely demanding and improvement will be crucial in order for the freshmen wrestlers to have success."
