A mini-grant from the Saucon Valley Foundation for Educational Innovations organization that will help pay for part of a World Cultures class was questioned during the Nov. 7 Saucon Valley School Board meeting.

Board member Bryan Eichfeld asked fellow board member Sandra Miller to explain a two-day class titled "Understanding Religion Through Inspection." A mini-grant will help pay for the class.

Miller said high school students will visit a synagogue, Hindu temple and Muslim community to better understanding other world religions as part of the class.

"It's a way of exposure," Miller said.

Eichfeld asked if Christianity was presented in the class. Miller said Christianity was not included in the course..

"Almost all of them [students] have had exposure to Christian faith," Miller said.

Board member Sandra Baxter suggested the Christian faith be integrated into the course.

"We need to be balanced," Baxter said.

The mini-grant was approved by the board, with Eichfeld voting in opposition.

In other business, district Superintendent Sandra Fellin presented the board with a break down of high school electives as well as a list of what Palisades, Salisbury and Southern Lehigh school districts offer.

"The thought was, what do other districts do, that surround us," Fellin said.

The board will review the list provided by Fellin and further discuss electives offered at a future meeting.

Fellin also recognized board member Eric Adams for his service on the board. Adams was appointed by the board to fill former board member Lanita Lum's position until the end of the year.

"He's given us his all," Fellin said of Adams. "He's been such a pleasure to work with."

The next meeting will be held 7 p.m. Dec. 3 in the high school Audion room.
