Charter school in good standing
The Medical Academy Charter School (MACS) has finally satisfied the Catasauqua Area School Board charter agreement.
During last month's meeting, the school board required the charter school, located at 330 Howertown Road, to submit proof of planned courses of study and associations with area medical facilities. If the charter school failed to do so, the board indicated it would consider revoking the charter.
At the Nov. 11 meeting, district Superintendent Robert Spengler told board members MACS has successfully presented adequate planned courses of study and proof of associations with health care providers.
"Kristina [Lutz-Doemling] and I did review the curriculum and it does meet the standards satisfactorily," Spengler said.
MACS founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors Craig Haytmanek, M.D., said the school has recently developed – or is one step closer to finalizing – associations with health care organizations in the area such as Sacred Heart Hospital and Whitehall Manor.
Haytmanek said he has been able to improve the charter school's relationship with ManorCare, despite a series of stories published recently by another local newspaper that he said led to difficulties working with the health care facility.
"We have again smoothed that over," he said. "I think we've been somewhat successful. I continue to work with these health care facilities."
While the charter school has experienced difficulty meeting certain aspects of the charter the past year, Spengler said developing curriculum is a work in progress.
"I think we would expect a greater level as we progress through the next years," Spengler said.
Haytmanek and MACS CEO and Principal Joanna Hughes have regularly attended school board meetings the past two months.
