Parkland ends Zephs season again

Whitehall head girls' soccer coach George Romano knew it was just one of those games. He wasn't going to mince any words about the outcome either.

For the better part of his team's District 11 Class 3A semifinal against Parkland, his squad had arguably outplayed their opponent in nearly every phase. In fact, Whitehall outshot Parkland, 15-5.

However, Whitehall left the field frustrated in a 2-1 loss. It was the second consecutive year that Whitehall lost to Parkland in the final.

"We really didn't lose this game," said Romano. "We totally dominated the second half of the game. It just didn't happen for us. I really feel bad for the girls because they played a great game.

"We had opportunities, but we couldn't cash in on them. They (Parkland) score two goals on just five shots."

Parkland took a 1-0 lead in the opening half before the Zephyrs tied the game on a goal from Kylee Cunningham. Their opponents took the lead for good with a little less than three minutes left in the opening half. Parkland's goals were from long distance.

"We gave it up only one a few occasions and it cost us," added Romano. "They might have played better in the first half, but we took over in the second half."

The defeat ended a mild three-game, shutout winning streak for the Zephyrs beginning with a 4-0 blanking over Palisades in the season finale before they handled Emmaus, 5-0, in their opener, before they dropped Stroudsburg, 2-0 in the postseason.

Whitehall had lost to Parkland, 5-1, and 3-1, in both regular-season matches.

Despite the finish, Romano knew his team wasn't taking any prisoners and was ready to make their statement this season. Unfortunately, Whitehall's season will end with an overall 12-9 record as only one team advances to states.

"We really played outstanding in our last few games," stated Romano. "I am extremely proud of what these girls accomplished this season. Everyone was saying that Whitehall has lost too many girls from last season and we weren't going to be able to compete.

"Well, I think we shut up a lot of teams out there. Teams found out that they were in a for a game against us. It will be difficult for the seniors to move on because of the love and camaraderie on this team.

"Our players left their legacy here and everyone will know that this program is here to stay."
