Hawks season ends at states

Once Paul Abi-Daher got everyone on board for this volleyball season the results spoke for themselves.

Bethlehem Catholic was hit with early season injuries and adjustments that followed, which could have derailed their train toward a second straight district championship.

That wasn't the case for Becahi, who went on to achieve part of what they had hoped for this season - winning districts - but couldn't accomplish their second goal of getting past the first round of states.

The Hawks fell to Pope John Paul II last week in the PIAA 2A tournament, falling to their District One counterparts in a three-game sweep (20-25, 18-25, 10-25) at Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium.

Despite the defeat, Abi-Daher walks away from this season with a sense of pride and accomplishment for what the Hawks (15-9) achieved throughout the campaign.

"I thought this season was very challenging," Abi-Daher said. "With all things considered, I thought we accomplished what we wanted to do, but I still would have liked to win that first round matchup of states."

The loss to Pope John Paul II was the second straight year the Hawks lost to that opponent in the opening round of the state tournament and a three-game sweep isn't what he was looking for.

"We just came out flat and didn't execute," he said. "We always looked a step behind. We didn't execute properly and it wasn't our night."

But it was Becahi's season in 2A, as they lose three starting seniors from this years team, including Taylor Bennett, Kelsey Mowrey and Jean Markovic.

With six juniors back in the fold for next year, Becahi will look for the schools first three peat in 22 years.

"I think we can certainly do it," he said. "What we did this year with our lineup is what we planned on doing next year, so the transition should be easier. We're going to have experience and we'll be competitive."
