Hawks look for first D-11 title since 2001

It's business as usual this week for Bethlehem Catholic and that's exactly how Joe Henrich wants to keep things heading into Saturday's District 11 2A championship at Southern Lehigh.

Kickoff will take place at 7 p.m. against the top-seeded Spartans (10-1), who are coming off a 27-3 victory over fourth-seeded Pottsville last week.

It will be Becahi's first opportunity to play for a district title since their 2002 loss to Parkland in the 4A title game. Becahi's last district championship came in 2001 and Henrich doesn't want to unnerve his players anymore heading into this week's title bout.

"These kids have proven over the last four weeks that they're pretty focused on the task at hand," said Henrich. "They've been humble about it and they're still hungry for more."

The Hawks (7-4) had little trouble in their 34-6 opening round playoff win over Lehighton last week, but Henrich felt the team still had a sense of unfinished business following the win.

"I think they expected more out of themselves from that game," he said. "I didn't really see any celebrating for their first playoff win."

Southern Lehigh brings an impressive record to the table from the Colonial League, as their only loss came in a 62-35 week two drubbing to Catasauqua.

The Spartans run a Wing-T offense and compiled 296 yards of rushing against the Tide, led by Travis Edmond's 135 yards and two scores.

Playing against Lehighton and Southern Lehigh in back-to-back weeks doesn't pose Henrich with any problems in regards to style of play, but he also understands that his players will have to be ready for Solehi's tricky offensive attack.

"Their offense is different from anything we've seen this year," said Henrich. "They do a good job of mixing in the pass, but they are a run oriented team. The big key for our defense this week is having them stay disciplined. They can't keep their eyes in the backfield because that's when you become paralyzed to what they're doing."

And despite Becahi's lack of familiarity with the Wing-T this season, it doesn't mean Henrich and his staff won't know how to prepare for it.

"I've been doing this for 20 years and so have some of my staff, so there really isn't anything you can throw at us that we haven't seen in our lives," he said. "We'll plan for them, but we also aren't going to change much of what we do. We are what we are and we need to ride that into this game and just stay focused on the task at hand."

One area that Solehi has an upper hand on this group of Hawks is their playoff experience, as the Spartans lost in last year's district championship to Central Catholic 23-0.

Having experience in a championship contest does come with its perks, but being the better team will ultimately determine the outcome of ending the Hawks district title drought.

"The big things for us this week is staying focused and not making the game bigger than it is," said Henrich. "We need to show up the day of the game with the right mental attitude and execute our game plan. It sounds simple, but that's really the big keys that I have for this week."
