Do you remember eating lunch in your elementary schools' lunchroom? Whether you bought or packed, loved the meals or were a picky grazer, most of us can recall those days.

For a memorable lunch with your fifth grader, join them at Harry S Truman's cafeteria Nov. 18. We all want our kids to eat a healthy lunch. A healthy lunch not only meets students' nutritional needs but keeps them energized. The age old question remains: Is it healthier to pack or buy your kid's lunch?

Both can be healthy. How to make your packed lunch as healthy as it needs to be, nutritionist and mother of two Vicky Pennington, a member of the British Dietetic Associations and Nutritionists, advises parents to get organized and make a checklist. It should include one of each item: A starchy food, lean protein and dairy. She recommends one or more drinks and lot of fruits and vegetables. The key here is planning what to pack ahead of time. Get that grocery list out!

When buying lunch from school, look over your child's menu together. Ask your kids to choose their favorite meals including whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean meats. Avoid high sugar, salt and fatty foods. For a beverage, low-fat milk or water are the best options. Are your kids still begging for cookies at noon? Try alternatives such as trail mix, homemade oatmeal cookies or fruit muffins. Another help for health conscious parents is www.kidshealth.org. This kid's site has an inexpensive section entitled, "Leftovers for Lunch." It displays recipes for a host of quick, flavorful dishes such as, "Grilled Veggie Pita" and "Roast Beef Wrap."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides an interactive, educational site brimming, with nutritional advice for kids and parents at www. myplate. gov/kids/index. html. Here kids can play games, print activity sheets, watch videos and listen to songs in order to instill a positive outlook on healthy eating. Parents can take advantage of the recipes and sample menus sections. Be sure to look for these two options: "The School Day Just Got Healthier" and "Kid Friendly Veggies and Fruits."

For fun and to reinforce healthy habits, there's a page called, "My Plate Champion" where your child can take a pledge, promising to eat healthy and to be active every day. Unhealthy food choices to avoid are also highlighted under the, "Empty Calories" section. It contains the most frequently consumed foods in America. Ultimately, we can't micromanage every morsel our kids eat; however, we can do our best to teach them to be wise, independent thinkers when it comes to their diets.
