'Canes storm past FHS
There's one cliche that all football coaches preach about when it comes to keys to victory and that's limiting turnovers.
Teams that can capitalize on that pesky stat tend to win and those who become the victims usually lose and that was perfectly clear last Saturday afternoon at Frank Banko Field when Liberty helped use six Freedom turnovers to score a 25-7 victory over their city counterparts.
The victory failed to get Liberty (5-5, 4-5) into the Eastern Conference 4A playoffs, which was something that many people anticipated, but it ended their season under first-year head coach John Truby in glorious fashion.
"For the community and the kids, this is huge," said Truby of the victory. "I can't imagine a better way to end the season."
Liberty quarterback Doug Erney threw for 338 yards with his two TD throws going to mobile wide receiver Darius Jones for 70 and 75 yard scores.
Harvey House added two rushing scores for the Hurricanes, as they opened the game up with an 18-point second quarter to eventually stave off the Patriots.
Erney found Jones in the second quarter for both of his TD throws, with the 70-yard TD connection coming at the start of the second quarter and the latter coming at the end of the period with 1:55 remaining in the half.
"We're capable of big plays all the time, but we sometimes just miss them," said Erney, who is now two-for-two against Freedom as a sophomore. "We have a lot of young receivers and playmakers on this team and we're looking forward to having success over the next couple years with a lot of these guys coming back."
Freedom looked like the team that came out with the energy to win, as the Pates took 4:55 off the clock to open the game, but freshman quarterback Joe Young fumbled the snap at the Liberty 34 to kill the drive.
It was the first turnover over the course of a long afternoon for Young, who threw five interceptions after starting his day 5-for-5.
Young finished 8-of-18 for 81 yards and six turnovers before he was replaced with a minute left in the game.
"Joe's pretty even keel and he handles emotions pretty well," said Freedom head coach Jason Roeder about his young quarterback's performance. "He's a freshman and he never gets too high or too low. It's tough to read at times. You can't turn the ball over and you can't give up big plays and we let too much of those things happen."
Freedom's rushing attack totaled 214 yards on the day with Joe Santos leading the way with 87 yards. Louden Klotz was the only Patriot to find the end zone, as he scored from 11 yards out with 2:13 remaining in the second quarter to draw within 12-7.
That's when Erney found Jones 18 seconds later for the 75-yard score to kill any momentum Freedom had built.
"There were a lot of momentum swings in this game and that was a big one," said Truby. "I was nervous when [Joe Young] came out 5-for-5, but we were able to do enough to get to him and push things in our favor."
As Liberty celebrated, Freedom sulked in the result following the final whistle. Roeder and his team soaked every second of the agony for a reason.
"We met at the end and we took it all in," he said. "This hurts like crazy and we need to use this. It's not going to be a good memory, but something that has got to push us in the offseason."
