Spirit, success, and Homecoming Week
As the end of the first marking period approaches, Saucon Valley students participate in Spirit Week, a sequence of themed days from Oct. 7 to 11 to ease academic stress and encourage Saucon pride before Homecoming weekend. The School Spirit Club and Student Government, both administered by teacher Cheri Chisesi, spent the week planning and decorating for the annual fall pep rally. The Homecoming Court was announced, and the 2012 Homecoming Queen, Jodi Laputka, made an appearance to pass the crown to 2013 Queen Bridget Gilmore.
Thursday's pep rally also recognized the success of fall sports and their seniors, including football, girls volleyball, field hockey, boys and girls soccer, cross country, golf, marching band and cheerleading. Congratulations were sent to senior Elizabeth Chikotas for winning the District XI AA girls cross country championship for the fourth year. The cheerleading squad, dance team, and even football players prepared amusing and entertaining dances to bolster the school's excitement.
Despite the relentless rain that Thursday night, the bonfire burned as bright as Saucon's spirit for the next day's football game. A tailgate was even coordinated by the Social Studies Department, complete with a grill and baked goods to rally students to join the intensifying student section, "The Jungle." Panther pride strode onto the field Friday Night to meet Notre Dame's Crusaders. With the support from the students, cheerleaders, and band, the football team defeated the Crusaders, 17-7. Senior Nick Savant led the Panthers with two touchdowns. Saucon celebrated its well-earned success with the Homecoming dance on Saturday night. Marco Santiago joined Bridget as the 2013 Homecoming King.
In addition to their vivacious support of Saucon, the marching band has been busy competing against other schools with its 2013 show, "Phantom of the Opera." Drum Major Jeremy Kuba led the band at their USSBA State Championship at Kutztown University, where they earned a third place ranking. The community also got a glimpse of the band's energy during the Hellertown Spirit Parade and Bethlehem Halloween Parade, as they performed Michael Jackson's "Thriller," accompanied with a chilling dance. The band will continue to compete at Nationals Nov. 9 at Met Life Stadium.
Saucon Valley's final home game was played Oct. 25 against Wilson. Senior Night ended in success for the Panthers with a score of 53 to 7. Senior members of the football team, cheerleading squad and marching band were acknowledged for their dedication and hard work over the past four years of their involvement. The community wished them good luck for the end of their season and with their future plans. The Panthers play their next away game on Nov. 1 against Palisades.
