Moore to honor veterans Nov. 11

Moore Elementary School will be honoring local veterans Nov. 11 during the school's second annual Veterans Day program.

The day will involve veterans visiting classrooms, meeting with the students, teaching them about the military and a visit by U.S. Congressman Charlie Dent, R-15th. Students will also eat lunch with the veterans.

Principal Curtis Dimmick said the program was initiated last year to educate students about the purpose of the military and the role military personnel and veterans play in America.

"We decided that it was time for all of our students to show their appreciation to our veterans for all that they have done, and continue to do, to make us safe," he said.

Dimmick said the students enjoyed meeting the veterans last year.

"It was very rewarding for everyone and very heartwarming to see the connections made between the veterans and our students," he said.

Dimmick added the veterans were equally excited about participating last year.

"I saw some tears, a lot of laughter and quite a few hugs," he said.

Last year, roughly 20 veterans participated in the program. Dimmick said he expects the same number of veterans at this year's program.

Dimmick credits Moore sixth-grade teacher Brian Muschlitz who spearheaded the program.

"Without his work and the work of the committee, we would not be able to hold such a wonderful event," Dimmick said.

The day will conclude with students and staff walking a lap around the school waving American flags and then lowering the American flag while Taps is played. The school will also discuss plans to develop a Peace Garden on school grounds to honor the veterans in the Moore Township area.

Veterans interested in participating should contact Muschlitz at muschlib@nasdschools.org or call 610-837-1859.
