LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Girls set for Pleasant Vy.

It's District 11 playoffs time and that means expect the unexpected.

For Northampton's field hockey that's exactly what is happening.

The Konkrete Kids, seeded third in the Class 3A playoffs, drew a first-round bye and expected to face Liberty first.

But, that didn't happen as 11th seeded Easton knocked off Liberty 1-0 in the first round and became Northampton's opponent last Saturday.

Coach Kelly Backenstoe's Kids then did the expected with a 2-1 victory over the Red Rovers and earned a spot in the District semifinals.

The Kids expected to see Stroudsburg - the No. 2 seed and unbeaten this year - but that didn't happen as No. 7 seed Pleasant Valley upset the Mountaineers 2-1.

That set up a match with Northampton in the semifinals and that game was played Wednesday night at Whitehall, after Northampton Press deadlines.

A Northampton win would place the Kids (13-6-1) in the District 11 title game Saturday against top-seeded Emmaus or No. 5 seed Nazareth. Both the District 11 champion and runner-up advance to the PIAA state tournament next week.

Backenstoe was expecting a tough game Wednesday.

"We beat them (Pleasant Valley) in our second game back in August. But they have improved vastly, as we have.

They beat Stroudsburg by scoring on their only corner shot, while Stroudsburg missed on 26 corner shots. They (Pleasant Valley) are a good team."

Meanwhile, Northampton's win over Easton came with a battered lineup as co-captains Kaitlyn Fehnel and Brianna Dalton were unavailable (appendicitis and personal reasons for Dalton).

Makenna Marhefka and Megan Wiest scored the Northampton goals with Amber Saylor and Marhefka registering assists. Easton's Erica Tarsi scored with 20 minutes left in the first half before Wiest scored for Northampton at the 4:50 mark of the first half.

Northampton's defense stood out in the second half as the Red Rovers had only two corner plays and no shots on goal.

"Goalie Shannon Dalton and midfielders Shannon Knipe, Madison Gogal, Autumn Klucsarits, and Amber Saylor stiffened to stop Easton," said Backenstoe.

For the game Easton had only seven corners and seven shots, while Northampton had 10 corners and nine shots.

"Goalie Dalton and Knipe really did a good job by communicating and the others did their jobs as well," said Backenstoe. "All of our girls were outstanding. It was a team win."
