Girls run comes to an end
When it comes to District 11 postseason play over the last two seasons, the Parkland girls' soccer team has had Whitehall's number.
The Trojans defeated the Zephyrs in last season's district title game. Unfortunately for the Zephyrs, they met up with the Trojans a year later in this season's district tournament. And the results were similar to those from a year ago, right down to the final score.
During Tuesday night's District 11 3A girls' soccer semifinals, the No. 4 seeded Trojans ended the No. 9 seeded Zephyrs' season with a 2-1 victory at Emmaus High School.
"You always want to beat every team you play," head coach George Romano said. "Parkland has a good program, and that's why we look forward to playing them. Every team wants to play one of the best teams."
Despite their season coming to an end, the Zephyrs impressed Romano throughout the entire season.
"We have surpassed what we have expected because I don't have a player on my team that plays club soccer," Romano said. "I'm pretty happy where we have reached, and I'm excited."
The Trojans got on the scoreboard first roughly midway through the first half. Rachel Medlar found Chelsea Hudson, who fired a shot just under the crossbar to put the Trojans ahead 1-0 with 16:56 to play in the half.
Whitehall's Kylee Cunningham responded just minutes before halftime to tie the game. Madison Walker positioned a lob pass over the Trojans' defensive line, and Cunningham was able to direct her shot into the back of the net with 6:27 remaining in the half.
Madeira and the Trojans wasted no time in a response of their own, though. Madeira's goal came 5:25 later, with a little more than a minute to play in the first half, proved to be the game-winning score.
"With having players that have never played, technically and tactically there was a lot of work we had to do in the offseason and in season," Romano said. "This is why we lost a few games. To be able to be here, it's a good legacy for us, and I'm happy with what I've seen."
After three total goals in the first half, both teams were held out of goal in the final 40 minutes.
The Zephyrs, however, had a number of chances at recording the equalizer in the second half. With 10:35 remaining, a deep free kick from Kourtney Cunningham sailed a few feet above the crossbar. Four minutes later, Cunningham had another opportunity on goal, but her shot from the left side was saved by Trojan goalkeeper Regan Allsup.
The Zephyrs had one final shot with roughly 2:30 remaining. The Zephyrs had the ball in front of the Trojans' goal being kicked around, but they were never able to produce a solid shot on goal.
"It's a game," Romano said. "In a game, sometimes you have luck and sometimes you don't. We just didn't have it today. We totally dominated I think in the second half for sure. I changed a few things, and put three strikers up top to apply the pressure. We kept them back there for awhile, and it just didn't go in for us."
The Trojans defeated No. 5 seed Nazareth in the district quarterfinals, 1-0, while the Zephyrs defeated No. 9 Emmaus in the first round and No. 1 Stroudsburg in the quarterfinals, to set up a rematch of last season's district finals.
