Zeke Moisey heading to WVU
Zeke Moisey narrowed his college destinations down to two optionsArizona State or West Virginia.
And when it came down to it, staying closer to home and having the opportunity to wrestle as a freshman became deciding factors for the Bethlehem Catholic senior.
Moisey committed himself to the Mountaineer program earlier this month, following the path Darian Cruz made to make a college decision before the start of his senior season.
"Darian was really the best workout partner you could ever ask for and I was lucky enough to have him for three years," said Moisey. "He definitely helped me a lot and I wanted to get my college decision out of the way before the season started."
Moisey is a three-time District 11 2A champion, a three-time PIAA qualifier and a two-time state runner-up, taking second his sophomore and junior seasons.
With two surgeries on his right shoulder during his first two years at Becahi, Moisey battled injuries early on, but found himself healthy last year when the Hawks sent 12 wrestlers to the PIAA championships.
With six of those wrestlers returning to this year's squad, Moisey doesn't see himself as the top dog in the wrestling room, but rather another piece to the puzzle for a hopefully successful senior year.
"We got a lot of good guys coming back like Andrew Dunn, Luke Karam, Jose Ortiz and Nick Cortopassi," he said. "I'm just real excited to go into my first season at full strength. I feel like my conditioning is as good as it's ever been."
Becahi head coach Jeff Karam has seen his wrestlers filter to the Division-I scene for the past three years and is excited for Moisey's opportunity to wrestle against some of the best competition in the country in the Big 12.
"We have been extremely fortunate to have another student-athlete come through the program and continue his education and wrestling at a D-I school," Karam said. "I think Zeke is a great fit for West Virginia and he'll have an opportunity to start as a freshman. Now he can focus on his senior year and concentrate on the goals he set as a freshman."
That in all likelihood is coming home with a state championship this year, as Moisey plans to wrestle at 126-pounds this season.
He's already shown his preseason ability, by taking home the outstanding wrestler award at the Iron Horse tournament this month.
Moisey rolled through the tournament by going 4-0, knocking off Sam Cali of New Jersey by fall in :49, beating Stephen Persaud, (NJ) 6-3, Jared Prince, (Fl.) 2-1 and New York's Travis Passaro 8-3.
"I beat a guy that was ranked ahead of me nationally, so that's always a good thing," he said. "I'm just really happy with everything right now and I'm glad to have my college decision out of the way. I think West Virginia is the perfect environment to succeed."
