LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Western Salisbury Column

Nov. 5 is Election Day! It is the municipal election, which means voting for mayors, judges, city council, school board members and other local positions. They are very important to how our township and schools are run, so please go out and vote! Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Did you ever wonder why we vote on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November? I did, so I looked it up.

First, we vote in November because in 1845, when this was put into effect, the United States was a very agricultural society, so November was chosen as the month because all of the harvesting would be done by then. Tuesday was chosen because some people had to travel far distances to vote, maybe a whole day by horse and buggy. If the election was on Monday, citizens would have to leave on a Sunday, and in 1845, that day was reserved for church.

The first Tuesday after the first Monday was chosen for two reasons. First, because most businesses calculated their previous months sales on the first of the month and second, because Nov. 1 is All Saints Day, a Holy Day, in the Roman Catholic church according to usgovinfo.about.com.

The fifth grade class of Western Salisbury Elementary school will host their parents for lunch Nov. 12. Parents, don't miss this last opportunity to share lunch with your child at school.

I am also reminding everyone about the Tuesday evening yoga classes being held at Western 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Proceeds go to the WSE PTA.

Salisbury Middle School is holding a Halloween dance Nov. 1. Students are encouraged but not required to wear costumes.

SMS picture re-takes are being held Nov. 6.

The weekend of November 8, 9 and 10, Salisbury High School is presenting its fall musical entitled "Curtains." Tickets may be purchased from cast members, by emailing salisburytheatre@salisburysd.org or purchased at the door.

SHS picture re-take day is scheduled for Oct. 31.

There is a Salisbury Township School Board meeting in the administration building 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13.

This is one last reminder the Salisbury Township Public Works Department will begin the curbside vacuum leaf collection this week. The collection will begin in the fifth ward and will continue eastward through mid to late December. Residents are asked to place their leaves along the edge of the road. To facilitate the vacuum leaf pickup, please keep all vehicles away from the area where leaves are piled.

On Nov. 9, Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church is having its monthly breakfast fundraiser 8 to 11 a.m. A donation is suggested. All proceeds will benefit the 275th Anniversary Celebration.
