Tennis wins third straight D-11 crown

For the third straight season, the Parkland girls tennis team rambled its way through the District 11 Tournament to come out on top in the team championships. This year's victory came over Emmaus by a 4-0 score, with one match winding up tied after two sets.

Parkland won every set with the exception of the second set in the number one doubles match teaming Rachel Wong and Colleen Wylie against Emmaus' Katherine Guido and Elise Van Ormer. Parkland grabbed the opening set 6-3, but Emmaus grabbed a 6-4 win in the second set. The first two sets took about an hour-and-a-half to complete and the match was stopped tied one set a piece. In the other doubles match, Shelby Knafo and Emily Hanson downed Amy Young and Michelle Gunn.

"The real key for us has been being consistent," said Hanson. "We played our best and worked hard and that's what got us here."

In singles play, Parkland swept to victories in all three matches with number one Jenna Peng winning in 6-0, 6-0 sets against Kelly Nguyen of Emmaus. Anna Qiu won the number two singles match 6-2, 6-1 and Tuquyen Pham won 6-0, 6-3 in the number three singles match.

Second-year coach George Grim said his job is made easy because of the talent that's assembled on the team.

"They're an outstanding group of girls," he said. "What you do in the offseason really pays off, because it really is a short season and you're playing an awful lot of matches and you don't get a lot of practice time to change certain things.

"They came in very well prepared this year, so for me, it was just a matter of sorting out the lineup and keeping things organized."

The win in districts sent the team to the PIAA Tournament, opening with a preliminary round match against Conestoga from District 1.

No Parkland team has gotten to Hershey since 2001 and the Trojans needed a win in the preliminary round to reach that goal. Unfortunately, the Pioneers were up to the task and downed Parkland 3-0, with two matches left unfinished.

Conestoga's Lauren Banner picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Qiu in the only singles match that was completed. In doubles, Wylie and Wong lost 6-0, 6-0 and Hanson and Knafo lost 6-2, 6-1, bouncing the Lady Trojans out of the tournament.

This season saw Parkland extend its conference unbeaten streak to 77 matches, capturing the team championship in the LVC as well as sweeping all three singles and all three doubles LVC titles.

In addition to capturing the team title in districts, Peng and Pham teamed to win the doubles championship, while Peng finished second in District 11 singles.
